This devotion focuses on the life of a Christian whose life is thoroughly and fully overwhelmed and controlled by the vision and story of the Lord. The goal of the Christian story is complete captivation–we are seeking to be so captivated and controlled in every respect by the vision of Christian victory through the resurrection of Christ that our passions, priorities, and practices are all connected to it. Christ Jesus has entered the world, accomplished the work of the Father, and now is risen and ascended on high. Soon and very soon he will return to consummate his work in this world, transforming it into be God’s domain under his reign. This “beatific vision” as the Catholics suggest, this revelation of God and his Son, and the hope of a new heavens and a new earth ought to be the blood and pulse of the Christian’s hope. These images and longings are to be the very heart of our affections and loves. Notice how some of the texts which deal with this phenomena speak of it in the NT: Col. 3.1-4 - If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. [2] Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. [3] For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. [4] When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. 1 John 2.15-17 - Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. [16] For all that is in the world— the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions—is not from the Father but is from the world. [17] And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever. Rom. 8.5-6 - For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. [6] To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.
