Conclusion

» Throughout Church history different views of Jesus’ death on the cross have emerged. » Five major views have dominated throughout Church history, each containing specific dimensions of truth regarding the meaning of his crucifixion for us. » Jesus’ death offers us an example of our dedication to God, demonstrates God’s love for us, reveals God’s perfect justice, conquers the forces of evil and sin, satisfies God’s honor, and reconciles creation and humankind to God. » No one theory or view can comprehend the majesty and blessing of his death for us. The following questions were designed to help you review the material in the second video segment. What will be important in your mastering this material is your ability to carefully and specifically review the theories of the atonement, understand the arguments and evidence of each, and be able to evaluate them according to the Scriptures. Use the questions to carefully review the various positions, and be charitable; listen to all positions and seek to understand them before you criticize them. Be clear, concise, and biblical. 1. In what sense does the death of Jesus Christ serve as an example to us? Why would it be insufficient to view his death only as an example? 2. Explain the arguments and evidence for the view of Jesus’ death as a demonstration of God’s love. What problems emerge if we seek to make this the only credible view of Jesus’ death? 3. How does the death of Jesus demonstrate God’s sense of justice and government in this world? Why is this view insufficient as the only credible view regarding Jesus’ death? 4. In what way does the death of Jesus provide victory over the forces of evil, of the devil, and even death itself? Can this view, like the others, be understood as the only credible perspective or even the major perspective on the death of Jesus?
