sustained them in trial, and motivated them to go to the then-known ends of the earth with the good news of Christ. It is an empowering, transforming, and igniting vision, and one which needs to be rediscovered in our day and time. What we in urban ministry need today is to be captivated again by that life-sustaining and life-transforming vision. It is impossible to ignite someone else if our own embers are smouldering and smoking. Are you convinced that Jesus is the Messiah, that he died for our sins, and that he rose again the third day? Do you believe that he ascended into heaven and will soon return in power and glory to finish the task he began so many centuries ago? Does this story so control your heart and passions that you are willing to make any sacrifice necessary to see it broadcast to the very ends of the earth? If you are willing to receive it in this way, you will join in the wild adventure of the apostles, and extend the influence of their lives into your very home, place of work, and neighborhood. Only a vision so controlling and all-encompassing will give modern day urban disciples a vision that they can live–and die–by.

After reciting and/or singing the Nicene Creed (located in the Appendix), pray the following prayer: Eternal God, by raising Jesus from the dead you proclaimed his victory, and by his ascension, you declared him Lord of all. Lift up our hearts to heaven where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
