a. Capernaum was very close to a full day’s walk from Cana.

b. According to some scholars, this “royal official” means that the official was one of Herod Antipas’s officials of the court, even though Herod technically was not a king, but a tetarch (i.e., a ruler of a province).

c. Herod felt antipathy toward Jesus (cf. Luke 13.32; 23.9; Mark 6.17-29).

d. A man of this station would have been a wealthy aristocrat greatly impacted by Graeco-Roman culture and vision, and probably influenced very little by Jewish religious standards or issues.

2. The official’s request: Come down and heal my son, who is at the point of death, 4.47.

3. Jesus’ reply: “Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe,” 4.48.

4. Desperation’s insistence: “Sir, come down before my child dies,” 4.49.

5. Jesus’ answer to the official: “Go; your son will live,” 4.50; the official’s response, the man believed and went on his way , 4.50.
