For forty days after his resurrection, Jesus revealed himself alive to his disciples. On the fortieth day, he ascended to heaven to take his place as Lord and Christ at God’s right hand. Ten days after this, on the fiftieth day after his resurrection, he would send to us the promise of the Father – the Holy Spirit, the pledge of our salvation. Here we ponder the wonder of God’s working, from Easter Sunday to the Spirit’s descent at Pentecost. On the day of Pentecost, the fiftieth day that followed the Feast of Firstfruits, the followers of Christ were all together in one place, and the house was filled with the sound like the blowing of a violent wind. Tongues of fire came to rest on each of Jesus’s disciples, and they were filled with the Holy Spirit. They spoke in tongues that the pilgrims in Jerusalem could understand, as they spoke in all their languages the wondrous works of God.
