Weekly Reflection on It IsWell with My Soul True worship begins with obedience. Jesus knew that His baptism in water was the Father’s will and that it was necessary to “fulfill all righteousness” (v. 15 NKJV). And so, the perfect, sinless Son of God submitted Himself to what He knew to be God’s bidding and stood alongside sinners to be baptized by a fallen man—whom He would one day die to save. And Christ’s obedient act of worship so pleased the Father that heaven opened, and God’s Spirit came down on him like a dove. Then, “a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, whom I love, and I am very pleased with him’” (v. 17 NCV). God publicly endorsed Jesus! Why? Because Jesus demonstrated to all generations that authentic worship begins with a heart that is willing to obey. Without it, all worship “demonstrations” are mere exhibits—wasted, insignificant, futile. Jesus refused to engage in that type of worship. Instead, He would worship by submitting.
