Common Antagonist Besides its cultural assumptions and its sense of nostalgia, each of the three methods has a group or philosophy against which it is reacting. Each method is a corrective reaction to something that was not working at the time, or was no longer orthodox, like the Reformation’s response to Roman Catholic abuses, conservatives’ reaction to liberalism, or evangelicals’ separation from fundamentalism.

Cultural assumptions, nostalgic eras, and common antagonists are the shaping forces that define the Traditional, Pragmatic, and Emerging methods, each of which promises to restore vibrant faith in America.
