Chapter 20: Sacred Roots : Focus of Energy

R ATHER THAN GOING back to glory days (Traditional), reacting to shifting market conditions (Pragmatic), or contextualizing within a single culture (Emerging), energy should be directed toward integrating personal and community faith activities around the Story of Christ’s Kingdom, articulated by the Great Tradition . Every aspect of local church life must be de-segmented, re-oriented, and re-integrated back to a single theme: allegiance to Christ and his Kingdom Story . The goal is to restore Jesus’ prominence so he is not cropped out of the picture. Appreciating Local Tradition In Chapter 17, the Great Tradition was described as a Story (Scriptures) of a Champion (Christus Victor) who forms a People (Church) who are called to re-enact, embody, and continue the Story, narrated by the Holy Spirit (Creeds and Rule of Faith). The Great Tradition is the authori- tative foundation for all Christians, of all traditions, for all time. These are the elements that need to be incorporated in every dimension of a church’s life. But in addition to the Great Tradition, each church should understand and appreciate its own legacy of faith .

For example, Baptists should make their Baptist distinctives known. Lutherans should tell their family history. Foursquare congregations should ensure an appreciation of their own spiritual tradition. Every
