A. What did Jesus accomplish for us in coming to earth and dying on the Cross?
The Bible talks about the work of Jesus in at least three major ways:
1. Jesus died in our place to pay our debt for sins committed, to satisfy God’s honor, and to restore justice back to the universe (called the Satisfaction view).
a. Isa. 53.6 – All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
b. 1 Pet. 3.18 – For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit.
2. Jesus died in order to prove and demonstrate to the world the Father’s love, to help sinful humankind see how truly valuable we are in his sight (called the Moral Influence view).
a. Rom. 5.7-8 – For one will scarcely die for a righteous person – though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die – [8] but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
b. John 3.16 – For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
