Scripture Memory The canonical Scriptures provide the authoritative testimony of God’s saving work in Jesus Christ, and as such, must be mastered by every urban Christian leader for life, teaching, preaching, and counseling. Memorizing the Word of God, therefore, should be a central priority for those who intend to represent Christ Jesus as an ambassador of the Kingdom. Scripture Memorization provides us with 100% knowledge of the Scriptures in our hearts, allowing for easy retrieval and multiple, constant use in all aspects of our lives and ministries. 1. General Description: We require students to memorize several passages of Scripture related to the theme of the content of the course. Scripture memory helps prepare us for ministry, giving us the tongue of a disciple that we may know how to sustain those who are weary with a healing, encouraging word (Isa. 50.4). Furthermore, having the Scriptures readily available in our minds and hearts enables us to give an answer to everyone who asks us for a reason of the hope that is within us (1 Pet. 3.15). Truly, those who know the Word can therefore through the Holy Spirit “preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching” (2 Tim. 4.2). Remind the students that God’s Word is a treasure, and his Word hidden in the heart renews the mind, enriches the soul, and outfits for ministry. Let us honor him and his Word by hiding it in our hearts, meditating on it with a mind to obey, and looking for opportunities to teach his truths concerning Jesus Christ to others. God will be glorified as we allow the Spirit to transform our lives through the hidden treasures of God’s Word.
