Print Handouts of All Key Materials for Students A key part of your class preparation involves creating and distributing handouts for your students to keep them abreast of the course schedule, the weekly reading assignments, and the importance and nature of critical thinking. Course Schedule and with Notes Create a course schedule for your students which includes the days and dates for your class, the key subjects covered in each class session, as well as dates for quizzes and due dates for class assignments. This information will help your students anticipate assignments, know what to read and prepare for each class session, and meet all due dates on time. See Sample Course Schedule in the Appendix, create a course schedule for your class, and print copies for your students. Reading Assignments The Capstone Curriculum reading assignments posted on our website are keyed specifically to the lesson format of their modules. Please visit www.tumi.org/capstone and click on the reading assignments link for your module. There you will find the reading assignments list for your course. Printable (pdf) Reading Assignement Forms are located at www.tumi.org/mentor (listed by module). Important note: Depending on how you structure your course’s sessions, you have complete flexibility to break up the reading assignments into units that best match your actual class sessions. In other words, if you are running an eight-week course, simply break up the reading assignments to match your sessions. What is critical is that you focus on the lesson as the basic unit of teaching in your Capstone and Foundations courses. Finally, know that your students will most likely have different levels of reading ability. Regardless of their level of reading proficiency, you should emphasize that your students, as leaders, must strive to read and think critically, reading as much of the assignments as possible, and critically engaging the portions they do read. Of course, you should inform your students that they will be tested only on notes from the Workbook and classroom, and not on the data of their reading assignments. Nevertheless, your role as mentor is to demonstrate the richness of discovering insights from the reading, and integrate those insights in your summaries, questions, comments, and teaching.
