Chapter 7 Discerning the Way Forward (1769–1770)
Chapter Summary Woolman devotes the bulk of his Journal regarding 1769–1770 to recounting a trip he considered but never ultimately took. Woolman’s description of the process is a great study in Christian discernment, how we follow the guidance of God. Notice the process: His body is weak and unable to travel by land. His thoughts move to the slaves in the West Indies and he considers visiting them (like his visit to the natives of Pennsylvania). He brings the idea to God and waits—for a year. Then he brings the proposal before others, who affirm the idea and provide the necessary certificates. The way was then clear to leave, and he notes changes in his own spirit; he feels like a stranger in his own home. The important matter is his resignation before God. He explores a little further and hears of a ship headed to Barbados. Two matters need explanation at this point: (1) The ship is owned by well-respected Friends and
