conversations. I personally feel a greater and greater need to practice this aspect of tough talking. I need to give time, not only before my meetings, but after them: to sit, reflect, pray, and listen to what God has to say to me about the person, the meeting, or my own ministry of conversation. I keep a little sheet of paper for each person I meet with— a part of my journaling—to record the insights I receive during those brief moments of reflection after my meetings. Prayerful preparation, prayerful sharing, and prayerful reflection: these are the essentials of successful talks when the talking is tough. Below is an outline you may want to use as you consider your own next tough talk: Prayerful Preparation – Before the Conversation Have I prayed for myself, for others, and for the conversation? How do I feel as I anticipate this talk? Are there any talking points I might need to remember? Prayerful Sharing – During the Conversation Am I dwelling deep in the midst of this mutual sharing? Am I truly sharing from who I am in this situation? Am I keeping in mind that this conversation is for God and for others?

What kind of support surrounds me? Where do I see the Holy Spirit at work? Prayerful Review – After the Conversation

What happened? How did we feel? Where was God?
