Mission with Prophetic Power: The Journal of John Woolman
Glossary Animal Spirits – This phrase refers to the more crass or perhaps shallow human emotions. Awful[ness] – Full of awe. Black Person, Woman – Woolman used the term “negro,” which was the common term in his day, to refer to people of African descent. Concern – A Quaker “concern” is a sense of burden about some issue or situation that others confirm as a leading of God. These concerns are “found” in our hearts then “followed” in our relationships and actions. Draught – The British spelling for “draft,” like a draft of wind. For Woolman, a draught in his mind is a little breath from the Spirit of God inclining him to a certain action. Drawing – A leading of the Spirit. Easy – To be “easy” or “not easy” with a task or idea is a way that Friends speak of their freedom in the Spirit to participate or affirm a given situation. Being “not easy” to something is similar to what we mean when we say we cannot do it “in good conscience.” Entertainment – Housing arrangements, usually with Friends who hosted traveling ministers. Exercise – To be “exercised” or to have an “exercise” is to be moved by God in some special way. A strong “exercise” refers to a powerful experience of the Spirit.
