God’s Three-In-Oneness: The Trinity (continued)

Some Initial Difficulties in Pondering God as Trinity • Beyond our ability to understand • No earthly analogies exist • Modernity, post-modernity, and the dominance of science: the character of our age • Biblical illiteracy, theological novices, and no sermons The Need for Wonder • God is utterly incomprehensible as he is in himself. • We must take off our sandals in the presence of such a being. • Worship, not calculation, is the end of such reflection. The Need for Submission • The Scriptures are infallible as our rule of faith and practice. • The Church’s teaching must guide us true. • Our wills, not our intellects must finally overcome our human inability to grasp that which cannot be fully grasped.

The doctrine of the Trinity is truth for the heart. The spirit of man alone can enter through the veil and penetrate into that Holy of Holies. “Let me seek Thee in longing,” pleaded Anselm, “let me long for Thee in seeking; let me find Thee in love, and love Thee in finding.” Love and faith are at home in the mystery of the Godhead. Let reason kneel in reverence outside. A. W. Tozer. The Knowledge of the Holy . p. 20.
