5. According to Scripture, why is discipline both a necessary and important dimension in the Christian walk? What role does one’s attitude play in being open to learning from others regarding our own life and the need to grow in our Christian lives? 6. In what way does Matthew 18 suggest that sin in the church be dealt with privately and confidentially? Why is this so important when seeking that all things be done for edification? 7. What is the significance of rejecting every charge which cannot be supported by two or three witnesses? How was this principle applied in the Old Testament? 8. If an offender refuses to listen after being entreated by two or three witnesses, what is to be the response of the church? Why is it important that leaders become involved in the process, once it reaches the level of the entire church treating the offender as an “unbeliever?” Explain. 9. What principles can we learn about discipline from the Apostle Paul and his exhortation of the Corinthian church? What are the cautions we must be aware of whenever we enter into a phase of discipline with others in the body? 10. What are some of the primary benefits of exercising godly spiritual discipline in the body? What are the implications of failing to exercise discipline in the Church? This lesson focuses upon the Christian leader recognizing his or her responsibility to guide his people through acts of restoration and discipline that lead both to the restoration of the offender, and the edification of his people. The practice of Christian exhortation, while commanded to everyone in the body of Christ, is especially important for the Christian leader (cf. Titus 2.15 - Declare these things; exhort and rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard you.) The challenge to “exhort and rebuke with all authority” is not a license to cruel control of the body, but loving and wise care of the people of God, who themselves need the benefit that wise and godly counsel and input can provide. Listed below are some of the critical insights in this lesson on the subject of Christian exhortation and discipline.
