Praying the Psalms with Augustine and Friends
Chapter 4: Psalms 60–80
127
gaze of the great Judge, when the One we justly fear in this world is the object of our joy when he is present before us, and we have been set free by his kindness! The psalmist added: may they be happy and joyful , so that the fact that they are glad can delight them. They know that their joy will never end, and they gain a sweeter delight in it because they do not feel that they will lose it. So the impending happiness of that blessedness is signified in what we may call glistening melodies. The God of Israel gives power and strength to his people. Praise be to God! (v. 35) No one should lose confidence because of human weakness, and believe that they are failing to attain such great rewards. The psalm affirms by truthful promise that the Lord will give the power of patience and the strength of faith to his faithful so that they can attain eternal rewards.
