Definition of “Burden” “An interest, desire, passion, or commitment to address a specific need or situation, to do good works, to make a difference, or to touch the life of some person or group with the love and gospel of Christ.”
1. They deal with ministering to others (have to do with exercising one’s gifts for the good of the body and the community).
2. They address needs which are felt, observed, or are brought to the attention of its members.
3. They give direction, life, and purpose to the service project team.
General Facts about Burdens and Service Groups in the Body 1. God gives burdens to his people to match their gifts and their calling. 2. Burdens usually begin with the felt needs of the participants to build up themselves in Christ, but naturally grow to meeting the needs of others.
3. Burdens involve not just our understanding, but our heart desires, our emotions, and those deep concerns which move us to compassion and to action.
4. Burdens may be developed through prayer, involvement and study.
5. People possess different burdens in varying degrees.
a. Some may last only for a period of time.
b. Some may organize to address a specific issue or concern.
c. Some may evolve into separate ministries or outreaches.
d. Some may cross-pollinate with others, forming new combinations of groups.
