Chapter 6: The Fullness of Time • 215
“I believe we were speaking of the traitor, Judas” said Leo, “my letter—my Tome, as you call it—concerns another traitor, who has departed from the catholic tradition by teaching what he does not understand—the incarnation of the Word of God.” “What do you mean, he departed from the catholic tradition?” I asked. “He should have studied the Holy Scriptures and listened to the confession,” replied Leo, “ We believe in God, the Father Almighty, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was born of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary .” “The Apostle’s Creed,” said Father Greg. “By which the heretics are over thrown,” added Bishop Leo. “Which heretics?” I asked Father Greg. “Eutyches for one,” he replied, “who taught that Jesus’ humanity was swallowed up by his divine nature so that he did not really suffer what we humans suffer.” 97 “Shall we return to the topic at hand?” suggested Mentor. “Judas’ kiss identified Jesus,” said Cesar, recapping. “Yet that sign was missed by the mob that came to capture the Lord,” said Leo, “because they could not tell true light from torches and shadows. 98 Therefore our Lord identified himself by declaring, ‘I am he.’” 99
