The Ancient Witnesses

Chapter 8: The Fulfillment of Time • 269

“Which one is saved, Preacher, the one who is taken or the one who is left behind?” “Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left,” Preacher read again. “The man who is left behind goes through the tribulation,” he replied. “It doesn’t say that,” objected Joseph. “But I’ve always understood the verse that way,” said Preacher. “I know,” said Joseph, “but that idea is not based on Scripture.” While Preacher continued studying the verse, Mentor offered to address my question next. “Why do you want to know about purgatory?” asked Joseph. “I caused an uproar when I asked about the Jews,” I said, “so, I thought I’d ask about something less controversial.” “I like your question,” said Joseph, “cause it’s about what happens to believers between death and the resurrection.” Purgatory Mentor invited Tertullian back to the lectern to represent the western Church view on purgatory, but as yet there was no witness for the eastern Church perspective. “Mentor, may I represent the opposing view? asked Joseph. “Do you understand what you are opposing?” asked Mentor.
