The Ancient Witnesses

Chapter 2: The Time Before Time

As we waited for the first chapter to begin, I pressed Father Greg to tell me what he really thought about our discovery. “There are at least two ways to look at everything, Ari,” he said. “You don’t believe we’ve gone back in time?” I asked. “I do believe in miracles,” he said, “but we must consider other possibilities.” “Like what?” I asked. “This might be a historical reenactment,” he said. “A what?” asked Preacher, overhearing. “A historical play, Edward. People travel from all over the world to visit Nicaea, so these men might be local actors who are paid to enact an early Church council— like Nicaea.” “Is that what Mentor said,” asked Cesar. “No,” admitted Father Greg, “Mentor is either a good actor or he truly believes he is the keeper of this library.”
