The following questions were designed to help you review the material in the second video segment. The call to the teaching ministry is synonymous with a call to equip the saints for the work of the ministry (cf. Eph. 4.12). In the same way that preaching is a divine calling and not a matter of study and scholarship alone, so the teaching ministry relies upon the gifting and enablement from Christ through the Holy Spirit. The teacher, also, must be a person striving to flesh out the righteousness of the Kingdom in their own life, and teach unashamedly informed by our Lord’s instruction in the Great Commission, i.e., to instruct disciples of Jesus to obey everything that he commanded . All this is done for the purpose of Christlikeness in character and life, and to understand and defend the apostolic tradition, i.e., the historic orthodox faith and how it relates to their life and witness. Truly, Christian leaders are commissioned to teach the Word of God (2 Tim. 2.2), so make certain you can reproduce the concepts reviewed in the questions below. 1. In what way can we say that the teaching ministry is synonymous with a call to equip the saints for the work of the ministry as recorded in Eph. 4.12? Why is it especially important to ground the teaching ministry in equipping the saints, and not merely informing them –what’s the difference between them? 2. Why can the preaching and the teaching ministry never be reduced to a matter of study and scholarship alone? Why is it impossible to have an effective teaching ministry without the gifting and enablement of the Holy Spirit? Cite Scripture in your answer. 3. Explain the “principle of character” as it relates to the teaching ministry. How does this same principle inform both the preaching and teaching ministry? Explain how a teacher’s character (or lack of it) will directly shape and impact the fruitfulness of the teacher. 4. Recite and explain the cardinal virtue of the teaching ministry, as well as its corresponding cardinal vice. How do these virtues and vices relate to those connected with the preaching ministry? Explain. 5. What is the heart of the content of the teaching ministry, and how does it relate to the Great Commission? What are other aspects of the teaching ministry mentioned in the NT, and for what ultimate purpose is all teaching in the NT aimed (cf. Romans 8.29; 2 Cor. 3.18; 1 John 3.1-2)?
