Preaching and Teaching Dr. Hank Voss

“Preach the Gospel through the Scriptures, in the power of the Holy Spirit.”

First, our daily walk must continually be in the Word (listen, read, study, memorize, meditate, apply). Secondly, prayer must begin and continue throughout the whole process. Without the anointing of the Holy Spirit, no eternal fruit will be found. Third, if preaching every week, a plan is essential. The Revised Common Lectionary (RCL) offers a Christ Centered plan that can be adapted whenever needed. It preaches through the whole Bible over a three year period, but always keeps the focus on Christ. At TUMI, we encourage pastors to study the Scriptures using a three step method; Step One: Understanding the Original Situation; Step Two: Find General Principles; Step Three: Apply General Principles Today. Don’t be afraid to preach what you have heard in Scripture. The preacher’s greatest virtue is courage, and his greatest vice is cowardliness. The better we know our audience, the better we will be able to speak God’s Word to them in their particular context. The first step to knowing one’s audience is to pray for them. Secondly, even while preaching, keep listening. All Scripture is valuable, and every Scripture contains deep mysteries. But since we who preach are finite, we must listen carefully to what the Holy Spirit would have us speak from each particular text to each particular audience. The Holy Spirit may surprise us last minute, but it is wise to outline or write out one’s message ahead of time – especially in the first ten years of preaching. Dr. Don Davis suggests there are three essential steps to preaching effective sermons. 1) Establish Contact with the hearers through spotlighting issues, concerns, ideas or experiences that resonate with the audience; 2) Deliver Content of Scripture. Paint a picture of the Scripture’s message to show not merely tell the Bibles theme. 3) Make Connections between the Bible’s content and particular responses of God’s people.
