[8] So, passing by Mysia, they went down to Troas. [9] And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: a man of Macedonia was standing there, urging him and saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” [10] And when Paul had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go on into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them. 6. A solid mentor diagnoses accurately ; they respond to the needs of those who they lead, 1 Thess. 5.12-14 – We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, [13] and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves. [14] And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all. 7. A solid mentor is patient; they respect the time-tags that must be paid in order for those whom they lead to learn and grow, 2 Tim. 4.1-2 – I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: [2] preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.

III. Characteristics of Excellent Coaches

A. The need for humility , James 3.1 – Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness.

B. The need for quality example , 1 Cor. 11.1 – Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.

C. The need for leveraging insight and proven experience , 2 Cor. 8.22-23 – And with them we are sending our brother whom we have often tested and found earnest in many matters, but who is now more earnest than ever because of his great confidence in you. [23] As for Titus, he is my partner and fellow worker for your benefit. And as for our brothers, they are messengers of the churches, the glory of Christ.
