Prophecies and “Double Fulfillment”
The OT contains dozens of Messianic prophecies that point to the future coming of an anointed one of the Lord who would destroy the devil’s work, end the curse, regather and glorify his people, and usher in a Kingdom of righteousness which would never be defeated or overthrown. Often these prophecies are given in the context of an actual historical event, and the prophecy, which appears to be future, was actually fulfilled in the lifetime of the prophet himself. For instance, Psalm 78.1-3 - “Give ear, O my people, to my teaching; incline your ears to the words of my mouth! [2] I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings from of old, [3] things that we have heard and known, that our fathers have told us.” This text appears to be a simple saying of David about the way in which he intends to speak to the people of Israel the promises and statutes of the Lord. The NT, however, ascribes this text to Christ, to the way in which he spoke parables to the people as he shared the Good News of the Kingdom with them (cf. Matt. 13.34). What appears here seems to be a “double fulfillment;” the saying is fulfilled both in
