4. In Jesus Christ, the promise first given in the Garden and renewed in Abraham is fulfilled: in his person God is now making available to all peoples redemption, blessing, forgiveness, and amazingly, eternal life through faith in him.
Conclusion
» In both the protoevangelium and the Abrahamic covenant God promised a seed to redeem humanity and restore what our first parents lost through disobedience and defeat the serpent, our mortal enemy, the devil. » This promise of a seed was first spoken in the protoevangelium (i.e., the first telling of the Gospel in Genesis 3.15), and then in the covenant promise of Abraham. » Jesus Christ himself is the singular fulfillment of these OT promises; he is both the seed of the woman who destroys the devil, as well as the seed of Abraham through whom all the families of the earth are blessed. The following questions were designed to help you review the material in the second video segment. In this last segment we briefly considered the major motif that links all biblical revelation in Scripture, is the promise and fulfillment motif. This promise of a seed was first spoken in the protoevangelium (i.e., the first telling of the Gospel in Genesis 3.15), and then in the covenant promise of Abraham. Jesus Christ himself is the singular fulfillment of these OT promises, being the seed of the woman who destroys the devil and the seed of Abraham blessing the families of the earth. Explore these meanings further as you answer the questions below. Cite Scripture in your answers. 1. How does the motif of promise and fulfillment link all dimensions of the Bible’s teaching, in both Old and New Testaments? 2. How does the promise-fulfillment motif affirm the unity of the Old and New Testaments , especially in terms of God’s intention to redeem and restore a people for himself? What role does the NT establish for Jesus of Nazareth in this purpose?
