The Sovereign Love of God

Second Sunday in Lent February 28 - March 6, 2021
The Lenten Season, a forty-day period starting on Ash Wednesday and ending on Holy Saturday of Holy Week, calls us to reflect on Jesus’s suffering, crucifixion, and death. As disciples of the humble Nazarene, we embrace his lowliness and humility, seeking to share the mind of himwho was obedient to death, even death on a cross. THIS WEEK’S THEME Jesus Foretells His Death, Mark 8.31-38 After Peter’s confession of Jesus as Messiah and Lord at Caesarea Philippi, our Savior makes his journey to Jerusalem, where he would now fulfill his messianic mission, defeat the powers, and atone for our sins as our sacrifice. Jesus foretold his death and resurrection to his disciples, teaching them he would suffer many things, be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and be killed. After three days, however, he would rise. Jesus rebuked Peter’s renunciation of this message, telling his disciples that if anyone would come after him, let that one deny himself or herself, take up their cross, and follow him.

Preparing Our Hearts
Invocation: Our Prayer of Acclamation Lord Jesus, forgive us for so often trying to recast you according to our own worldly, selfish image of what the Messiah ought to be. Rescue us from petty, small, and untrue images of you, and show us what it means to follow you. We are so desperate for you, even when we are unaware of our need for your provision
