Easter Sunday The Resurrection of the Lord April 4 - 10, 2021

WEEK 19

On Easter Sunday we celebrate the bodily resurrection of Jesus. The same lowly Nazarene – he who was betrayed by his own disciple, who suffered under Pilate’s cruel gaze, who was crucified on a Roman cross, and who was buried in a borrowed tomb – the same Lord rose triumphantly on the third day. Jesus has risen from death to life through the power of God. “Christ is risen! He is risen, indeed!”

THIS WEEK’S THEME Christ Is Risen, Indeed! Mark 16.1-8

Very early on the first day of the week following Christ’s crucifixion, women followers of Jesus went to his tomb to anoint his body with spices. Wondering how they might remove the stone at the entrance of the tomb, they arrived only to see that the stone had been removed. They entered the tomb and saw a young man sitting to their right. Sensing their fear, the angel told them not to be alarmed, for Jesus whom they sought, had risen from the dead; he was not there. The angel commanded them to go and tell his disciples and Peter to return to Galilee, where he would appear to them. Jesus is risen – he is risen, indeed!

Invocation: Our Prayer of Acclamation O God, who by your only-begotten Son has overcome death and opened to us the gate of everlasting life, grant us, we ask you, that we who celebrate the solemnities of our Lord’s resurrection may by the renewing of your Spirit arise from the death of the soul; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. ~ The Gelasian Sacramentary (Bright, p. 54)
