T he S eason after P entecost
Fifth Sunday after Pentecost June 27 - July 3, 2021 • Proper 8
WEEK 31
On Pentecost we commemorate the descent of the Holy Spirit to earth on Christ’s believers, his infilling of the people of God, the Church. Through him, the third person of the Trinity, Jesus our Lord is now present with his people. The Spirit is the guarantee of the promised inheritance to come. We ponder the fullness and mystery of our God’s person and work in our celebration on Trinity Sunday.
THIS WEEK’S THEME Alpha and Omega:
Covenant Keeper: Sin and the Promise of God, Genesis 3.15 When the first human pair joined the rebellion of Satan, God promised to send a savior to crush evil and save humankind. This Savior would make war, or enmity, against the serpent. At the cost of his own wounding, He will be victorious in the battle, crushing the head of the serpent. This is the first telling of the Gospel in Scripture (the proto-evangelium ). In the fullness of time, Christ our Savior fulfills God’s promise. He was wounded for our transgressions and died in our place. He rose from the grave victorious, and he will return to destroy evil forever. This is the sure and trustworthy promise of our God.
