WEEK 34

During “Ordinary Time” (Kingdomtide), we consider God’s saving acts through the unfolding of our days. As Christus Victor, Jesus is exalted at God’s right hand, and he must reign until his enemies are put under his feet. He is the head of the body, the Church, and now he empowers his people to bear witness of his saving grace in the world.

THIS WEEK’S THEME Christus Victor: Recapitulation: Christ the Fulfillment, Luke 24.25-27

Jesus of Nazareth is God’s Messiah. He fulfills God’s promise of a Savior, but perhaps not in the exact way that his followers expected. The two disciples on the road to Emmaus are dejected and confused. Jesus’s death and burial are incompatible with their notion of the victorious Messiah. Jesus explains from all the Scriptures how it was necessary that Messiah should suffer before entering into his glory. He has already dealt with our sin and set us free from death and the devil. We await his arrival to fulfill what we do not yet see, the final destruction of evil and the renewal of heaven and earth.

Preparing Our Hearts

Invocation: Our Prayer of Acclamation How sweet the name of Jesus sounds in a believer’s ear! It soothes his sorrows, heals his wounds, and drives ways his fear. It makes the wounded spirit whole, and calms the troubled breast; ‘Tis manna to the hungry soul, and to the weary rest.
