Weekly Reflection on the Sovereign Love of God Jesus came not only to teach but also to save; not only to reveal God to humankind, but also to redeemhumankind for God. This is because the major human problem is not our ignorance but our sin and guilt. And the redemption God has achieved, like the revelation he has given, is “through Jesus Christ.” Jesus Christ is the agent or mediator of both. The way this is expressed in the Letter to the Hebrews is that he “provided purification for sins” (Heb 1:3). The language is borrowed from the Old Testament sacrificial system. In the rest of Hebrews, Jesus is portrayed as our “great high priest,” greater than Aaron, and as the one who offered the perfect sacrifice for sin.
