The Sovereign Love of God

T he M anifestation of C hrist

79

Second Sunday after the Epiphany January 17 - 23, 2021 Epiphany commemorates the coming of the Magi, the wise men from the East who followed the star in search of the Christ child. This season emphasizes Christ’s mission to the Gentiles and his claim of salvation for the world. The psalmist begins and ends with the same words: “O Lord, you have searched me and known me” (v. 1); “Search me O God, and know my heart” (v. 23). He explores the unending presence of God, who is everywhere always. He explores the boundless knowledge and wonderful works of God, who is intimately involved with his creatures. When the psalmist tries to comprehend the thoughts of God, “they are more than the sand; I awake, and I am still with you” (v. 18). Our joy is not that we know him, but that he searches us and knows us. THIS WEEK’S THEME TheWonderful Works of God, Psalm 139.1-6, 13-18

Preparing Our Hearts

Invocation: Our Prayer of Acclamation O Lord, you are our Father, we are only clay from the earth. You are our Creator, and we are the work of your hands. You are our Shepherd, we are your flock. You are our Redeemer, we are the people whom you have bought. You are our God, we are your heritage. ~ John Calvin, 1509-64
