Epiphany affirms Jesus’ presence in the world as hope for all peoples. In him alone, God provides the light of his salvation, making known God’s grace to all peoples, even to the farthest corners of the earth.

In fulfillment of the Law, Mary and Joseph took Jesus to the temple to present him before the Lord. All firstborn sons in Israel belonged to the Lord and had to be ransomed by sacrifice. When they arrived at the temple with Jesus, they expected to simply make their offering. They were amazed when Simeon, a man full of the Holy Spirit, and Anna, a prophet, rejoiced and prophesied over Jesus. They rejoiced at being able to see this baby, the Lord’s Messiah, the redeemer of all humanity.

Invocation: Our Prayer of Acclamation Lord God, heavenly Father, who hast given Thy Son to be our Savior, a Light to lighten the Gentiles and the Glory of Thy people Israel, we beseech Thee, enlighten our hearts, that we may know Thy grace and fatherly will in Him toward us and obtain everlasting life; through the same, Jesus Christ, Thy Son, our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.
