112 • Think Again: Transformation That Yields a Return on God’s Investment

Leaf’s research in epigenetics suggests that it takes 21 days for certain protein changes to occur in the brain, so strongholds can be demolished at the end of those 21 days, employing practices requiring only 7-10 minutes per day. After three successive rounds of 21 days (63 days), your nonconscious thinking begins controlling your conscious thinking, and you begin to automatically respond in a healthy new way. This gives you mastery to the extent that mentoring can occur. So 21 days of sustained forging can form Christlike habits, and after 63 days you can begin discipling others. Dr. Leaf describes the following daily steps, each re-structuring a different part of the brain: Gather (become aware of your environment and thoughts); Focused Reflection (go deep with your thinking); Write (put your brain on paper); Revisit (create the change you want); Active Reach (do something). I studied these ideas and organized them in a way that made sense to me:
