II. Content: Every Soldier Must Learn to Be Patient and to Persevere – to Never Shrink Back or Give Up.

A. D EFINE THIS TIGHT . Perseverance comes out of and because of suffering – we persevere when we endure and overcome trial and trouble.

1. Trouble will come in different sizes, of various kinds, at random times, James 1.2-3 – Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, [3] for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. 2. Perseverance holds up under trials without giving in, 2 Thess. 1.4 – Therefore we ourselves boast about you in the churches of God for your steadfastness and faith in all your persecutions and in the afflictions that you are enduring.

3. We must endure hardship, knowing that the Lord will stand by us so we don’t quit, 2 Tim. 3.10-12 – You, however, have followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, [11] my persecutions and sufferings that happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra – which persecutions I endured; yet from them
