B. The exegetical interpretation : Iniquity has a definite kind of generational impact that cannot be ignored (e.g., the baby of a crack addict being born addicted to crack). 1. We reap in our lives directly from the decisions and actions sown by others (e.g., soldiers and armies from the decisions of politicians and diplomats). and mothers will impact the children and grandchildren (i.e., Ezek. 18.14-17 – Now suppose this man fathers a son who sees all the sins that his father has done; he sees, and does not do likewise: [15] he does not eat upon the mountains or lift up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, does not defile his neighbor’s wife, [16] does not oppress anyone, exacts no pledge, commits no robbery, but gives his bread to the hungry and covers the naked with a garment, [17] withholds his hand from iniquity, takes no interest or profit, obeys my rules, and walks in my statutes; he shall not die for his father’s iniquity; he shall surely live.) 3. The grace of God in Christ has made it possible for us to break the connection of generational guilt and sin , opening up an entirely new possibility of freedom and new life a. The old self can be put off, and a new self in Christ can be put on, Eph. 4.22-24 – to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, [23] and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, [24] and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
