A Biblical Vision, Part I: Mastering the Old Testament Witness to Christ
Session 3: The History of Israel as Type and Analogy in the Old Testament’s Witness to Christ 49
[4] No soldier gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him.
d. The weapons of our spiritual warfare are divine and effective, 2 Cor. 10.3-6 – For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. [4] For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments [5] and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ, [6] being ready to punish every disobedience, when your obedience is complete. 2. As Israel defeated their enemies and entered into God’s rest, so we in Christ by faith have defeated our enemies and enter in God’s Sabbath rest, Heb. 4.8-11 – For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken of another day later on. [9] So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God , [10] for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his. [11] Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience.
3. As God established kings on the throne of Israel, so God will establish Jesus Christ on the throne as King and Lord forever, and his people as co-regents with him.
a. Isa. 9.6-7 – For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. [7] Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
