A Biblical Vision, Part I: Mastering the Old Testament Witness to Christ

Session 5: Character Types of the Prophet Ministry, Pr iesthood, and Kingship of Jesus Chr ist 93

a. David, 2 Sam. 8.15 – So David reigned over all Israel. And David administered justice and equity to all his people.

b. Jesus, Jer. 23.5-6 – Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. [6] In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is the name by which he will be called: “The Lord is our righteousness.”

B. Implications for our understanding of the Old Testament’s witness to Christ and his Kingdom

1. David’s kingship over the people of Israel is a type which has been fulfilled in the person of Christ.

2. Christ is, in a final sense, the King over the Kingdom of God, the heir to David’s promises and the rightful authority to rule over the coming Kingdom.

3. Christ’s kingship is superior to David’s in that Christ’s kingly duties touch God’s ultimate reign over all peoples and nations, and will have no end of its blessing, justice, and freedom.

V. Principles and Implications for Old Testament Study

How can the study of types revolutionize my own personal study of the Old Testament, as well as my use of the Old Testament in ministering to others?
