E. The Herodians (members of a Jewish party who favored the rule of Herod and his dynasty): Collaborators with The Enemy
1. Believed it was right to pay homage to a ruler (i.e., Herod) who might be able through collaboration to bring to the nation the advantages of friendship with Rome
2. Opposed Jesus early in Galilee, with an attempt to take his life, Mark 3.6 – The Pharisees went out and immediately held counsel with the Herodians against him, how to destroy him.
a. Viewed Jesus as a threat to the peace of Israel
b. Jesus was a magnet for opposition among weird groups which disagreed with each other.
3. Opposed Jesus later in Jerusalem; with the Pharisees, they sought to entangle Jesus in his teaching, Matt. 22.15-21.
4. They conspired to trap Jesus, Mark 12.13 – And they sent to him some of the Pharisees and some of the Herodians, to trap him in his talk.
