(2) Deut. 1.30-33 – “The Lord your God who goes before you will himself fight for you, just as he did for you in Egypt before your eyes, [31] and in the wilderness, where you have seen how the Lord your God carried you, as a man carries his son, all the way that you went until you came to this place.” [32] Yet in spite of this word you did not believe the Lord your God, [33] who went before you in the way to seek you out a place to pitch your tents, in fire by night and in the cloud by day, to show you by what way you should go. b. The Lord sent his angel before his people and led them out of captivity to the place of rest and blessing, the Promised Land. (1) Exod. 14.19-20 – Then the angel of God who was going before the host of Israel moved and went behind them, and the pillar of cloud moved from before them and stood behind them, [20] coming between the host of Egypt and the host of Israel. And there was the cloud and the darkness. And it lit up the night without one coming near the other all night. (2) Exod. 40.34-36 – Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. [35] And Moses was not able to enter the tent of meeting because the cloud settled on it, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. [36] Throughout all their journeys, whenever the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the people of Israel would set out. c. The people of God moved forward or remained based on the “command of the Lord” for them to set out or stay where they were, Num. 9.18-20 – At the command of the Lord the people of Israel set out, and at the command of the Lord they camped. As long as the cloud rested over the tabernacle, they remained in camp. [19] Even when the cloud continued over the
