Dedication
We dedicate this booklet to the thousands of valiant spiritual warriors, both men and women, who are laying down their lives on mission fields all over the world for the sake of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
May God grant them all they need to stand firm and strong together, a band of brothers, in service to the Kingdom of our Lord.
Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him. – John 12.24-26
SIAFU Mens Conference, Band of Brothers: Why We Fight Rev. Dr. Don L. Davis, p. 6
“Lieutenant Dike was not a bad leader because he made bad decisions, he was a bad leader because he made no decisions.
– Second Lieutenant Lipton, of Easy Company, WWII who never ceased to think about the welfare of his men.
“We’re all scared. You hid in that ditch because you think there’s still hope. But Blithe, the only hope you have is to accept the fact that you’re already dead. And the sooner you accept that, the sooner you’ll be able to function as a soldier’s supposed to function. . . . All war depends on it.” – A comment that Spiers gives to corporal Blithe when he comes upon him in the dark
of night, as Blithe is cowering in a foxhole outside Caretan, awaiting a German attack. Blithe admitted to Spiers that he hid in a ditch on D-Day because he was simply too scared to fight. Spiers’s offered these words of comfort to the cowering Blithe.

“Band of Brothers”
Our theme for the Band of Brothers SIAFU Men's Conference is taken from a quote from King Henry V of England, the soldier-king who, in Shakespeare's play, rallied his troops to fight together against the French for England, their families, and for each other.
"From this day to the ending of the world, But we in it shall be remember'd; We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he today that sheds his blood with me shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile, This day shall gentle his condition. "
– King Henry V, in The Life of King Henry the Fifth,
William Shakespeare, | Act 4, Scene 3.
As a band of brothers, let us fight for the honor of Jesus Christ.

We Are a Band of Brothers in the Lord! Since we have such a huge crowd of men of faith watching us from the grandstands, let us strip off anything that slows us down or holds us back, and especially those sins that wrap themselves so tightly around our feet and trip us up; and let us run with patience the particular race that God has set before us. 2 Keep your eyes on Jesus, our leader and instructor. He was willing to die a shameful death on the cross because of the joy he knew would be his afterwards; and now he sits in the place of honor by the throne of God. – Hebrews 12.1-2, The Living Bible

Session One: Why We Fight
Band of Brothers Code
¶ Group 1: Blessed be the LORD, our rock, who trains our hands for war, and our fingers for battle; he is our steadfast love and our fortress, our stronghold and our deliverer, our shield and he in whom we take refuge, the very one who subdues peoples under us. ¶ Group 2: We are one in the Spirit, and one in the Lord, a band of brothers, born of the Spirit and the Word, a united troop of holy warriors, God’s champions. We are called out of the world to please him who made us his soldiers in this war of the worlds. ¶ Group 1: God’s Holy Spirit equips us with heavenly armor for the battle, and stirs up our hearts with a zeal to fight with discipline and a mind to suffer. We strive with longsuffering courage, and wage spiritual war with deep conviction and reckless abandon.
SIAFU Mens Conference, Band of Brothers: Why We Fight Rev. Dr. Don L. Davis, p. 12
¶ Group 2: We live unashamed, and will represent Christ and his kingdom in all our relationships, conduct, affairs, and behavior. We fight for his sake, to rescue the dying and the oppressed by testifying to God’s saving power through the Cross. We will not shrink back or relent, for we are warriors for God. ¶ All: Together we submit to godly authority in the church, and pledge to stand beside one another in every fight with every foe, no matter what. We will carry the banner of Christ, leave no man behind, and will struggle with our last ounce of courage to set others free with the truth of God. We are God’s happy few, a dedicated company, a band of brothers for the Lord giving all we have to honor our King, till the very end. Amen, and amen.

We Together Form One, United Troop: Everyone Deserves A Salute Lt. General Lewis Burwell “Chesty” Puller was one of the most admired and decorated officers in the history of the Marine Corps. Of his many admirable traits, Puller was respected by enlisted U.S. Marines because of his consistent effort to ensure that all the soldiers had the best possible gear and working conditions. He was a stickler for providing good equipment and demanding clear discipline for all soldiers. A story goes that once he came upon a second lieutenant who, encountering an enlisted man who forgot to salute him, then ordered the poor fellow to salute him 100 times. After hearing the story, Puller told the lieutenant, “You were absolutely correct in making him salute you 100 times lieutenant, but you know that an officer must return every salute he receives. Now return them all–and I will keep count.”
Among our band of brothers, everyone deserves to be saluted.

Why We Fight For the Sake of Jesus Christ
2 Corinthians 5:9 – So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him.
2 Timothy 2:1-8 – You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, 2 and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. 3 Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 4 No soldier gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him. 5 An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules. 6 It is the hard-working farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops. 7 Think over what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything. 8 Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, the offspring of David, as preached in my gospel, Luke 11:14-23 – Now he was casting out a demon that was mute. When the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke, and the people marveled. 15 But some of them said, “He casts out demons by Beelzebul, the prince of demons,” 16 while others, to test him, kept seeking from him a sign from heaven. 17 But he, knowing their thoughts, said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and a divided household falls. 18 And if Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that I cast out demons by Beelzebul. 19 And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. 20 But if it is by the finger of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. 21 When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his goods are safe; 22 but when one stronger than he attacks him and overcomes him, he takes away his armor in which he trusted and divides his spoil. 23 Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.

3. Christ is calling out of humankind a people for himself, soldiers enlisted to die to themselves and live for his glory as combatants in this war of the worlds, Luke 14.26-33
C. C HECK THIS OUT . The battle of the ages surround the question: “Who will rule this universe, and thereby be given all praise and honor within it?”

2 Corinthians 2:14-16 (ESV) – But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere. 15 For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing, 16 to one a fragrance from death to death, to the other a fragrance from life to life. Who is sufficient for these things?

Jesus, the Destroyer of the Devil’s Work: 1 John 3.8
New International Version The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil's work. New Living Translation But when people keep on sinning, it shows that they belong to the devil, who has been sinning since the beginning. But the Son of God came to destroy the works of the devil. English Standard Version Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. New American Standard Bible The one who practices sin is of the devil; for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil. King James Bible He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. Holman Christian Standard Bible The one who commits sin is of the Devil, for the Devil has sinned from the beginning. The Son of God was revealed for this purpose: to destroy the Devil's works.

Jesus is the Baddest Dude on the Block–of the Universe, that is! It was an eye-opening experience for the disciples to discover that "the demons are subject to us in Your name" (Luke 10.17). This verse pictures a group of soldiers snapping to attention and following precisely the orders of their commanding officer. Jesus was telling us that the demons are the soldiers and, in Christ, we are the generals. They must do what we command in Christ's name. We sometimes mistakenly see God and His kingdom on one side and Satan and his kingdom on the other side. Both kingdoms seem to be very powerful, and here we are, stuck in the middle between the two, like the rope in a tug-of-war. On some days God seems to be winning, and on other days the devil appears to have the upper hand. And we don't seem to have anything to say about who wins the battle. But that's not how it is. Spiritual authority is not a tug-of-war; it's a chain of command. Jesus Christ has all authority in heaven and on earth (Matthew 28.18); He's at the top. He has given His authority and power to His children to be used in His name (Luke 10.17); we're underneath Him. What about Satan and his demons? They're at the bottom, subject to the authority Christ has given to us. They have no more right to rule our lives than an army private has to order a general to clean the latrine.

Why We Fight To Rescue Those Who Are Oppressed By the Enemy
Romans 1:14-17 – I am under obligation both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish. 15 So I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome. 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.” Proverbs 24:11-12 – Rescue those who are being taken away to death; hold back those who are stumbling to the slaughter. 12 If you say, “Behold, we did not know this,” does not he who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not he who keeps watch over your soul know it, and will he not repay man according to his work? Jude 1:3 – Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints. Philippians 2:5-11 – Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Revelation 11:15 – Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever.”

II. We Fight To Rescue Those Who Are Oppressed By the Enemy
The war in the heavenlies is between the forces of God and the evil one, “who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world” (Rev. 12.9).
• The devil was the anointed cherub (covering angel) placed in charge of, or at least offered freedom to roam the newly created earth (Ezek. 28.11-19). • The devil (Lucifer, son of the dawn) fell from his high estate (Isa. 14.9 ff.), and took with him a host of angelic spirits who now make up his army of rulers, principalities and powers (Rev. 12.4ff). • Satan is the archenemy of God, but is not equal with God; he is rather, a rebellious prince of significant strength and resources. He now appears to have access to heaven (Job 1–3), but will be displaced by the forces of God and cast out of heaven (Rev. 12.9ff). • Scripture provides many descriptions of Satan: he is the thief who comes to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10.10), the deceiver (2 Cor. 11.3), the destroyer (Rev. 9.11, Abaddon means “destroyer”), the ancient serpent (Rev. 12), and devouring lion (1 Peter 5.8–9). • The devil, through his control of the world and those who belong to him, is the “spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience” (Eph. 2.2, NKJV). • His brashness is extraordinary: he even tempted our Lord, the Christ, Matt. 4.1-11
A. W HAT ’ S UP ? Everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin, John 8.34
1. We are in bondage to sin because of Adam’s disobedience, Rom. 5.1-21
2. We are in bondage to sin because of our own rebellion and failure, Ps. 51.1-5; 1 Cor. 6.9-11
3. We are in bondage to sin because of sin’s curse: death, Rom. 3.23; 6.23; Eph. 2.2
B. B REAK IT DOWN ! Sin, in every form, ensnares and produces bondage, binding you with wrongdoing, Prov. 5.22
1.
People are enslaved to their own lusts, Titus 3.3
2. People are controlled and oppressed by their own greed, Eph. 4.17-24
SIAFU Mens Conference, Band of Brothers: Why We Fight Rev. Dr. Don L. Davis, p. 21
3. People are in bondage due to their own pride and selfishness, Col. 3.5-7
C. C HECK THIS OUT . The wages (payday) of sin is death, but Christ’s gift is life for all who believe, Romans 6.23
1. Those who believe will be saved from the penalty of sin, Eph. 2.1-3; 1 Thess. 1.8-10; Eph. 5.5-6
2. And, through Christ’s grace, will be delivered from the power of sin, Gal. 5.16-24; Rom. 6.1-14
3. Ultimately, all followers of Christ will be rescued from the very presence of sin itself, and all of its effects, 1Thess. 1.9-10; Col. 1.13-14; Eph. 1.6-7
D. M AKE IT P LAIN . We fight in order to see those who are oppressed by the devil set free through the power of Christ
1. Through the word of our testimony, Rev. 12.10-11; 1 Pet. 3.15; Rom. 1.16
2. Through the power of our prayer and ministry, Phil. 4.6-7; Matt. 7.7-11; Luke 11.9-13
3. Through the witness of our lives and character, Matt. 5.16; Acts 1.8; Phil. 1.27-28

Why We Fight To Gain the Reward of the Upward Call of God In Christ Jesus
2 Timothy 4:7-8 – I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing. Philippians 3:12-16 – Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. 13 Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on
SIAFU Mens Conference, Band of Brothers: Why We Fight Rev. Dr. Don L. Davis, p. 24
toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. 15 Let those of us who are mature think this way, and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you. 16 Only let us hold true to what we have attained.
Luke 16:16 – “The Law and the Prophets were until John; since then the good news of the kingdom of God is preached, and everyone forces his way into it.”
2 Corinthians 4:17-18 – For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, 18 as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

III. To Gain the Reward
In the movie Chariots of Fire, young Harold Abrahams, a champion sprinter, had just suffered his first-ever defeat. After the race he sat alone, pouting in the bleachers. When his girlfriend tried to encourage him, he bellowed, "If I can't win, I won't run!" To which she wisely replied, "If you don't run, you can't win." Abrahams went on to win the 1924 Olympic Gold Medal in the hundred-meter dash.
A. W HAT ’ S UP ? We joined the fight not just to play around, but in order to gain the prize!, 1 Cor. 9.23-27
1. The prize of the upward call in Christ Jesus, Phil. 3.12-14
2. The prize of pleasing the one who enlisted us, 2 Tim. 2.4; 2 Cor. 5.9; 1 Thess. 4.1; Col. 1.9-10
3. The prize of the crowns given by our Lord: incorruptible, of righteousness, and victor’s, 1 Cor. 9.23-27; 2 Tim. 4.8; 1 John 5.3-4
SIAFU Mens Conference, Band of Brothers: Why We Fight Rev. Dr. Don L. Davis, p. 25
B. B REAK IT DOWN ! We must persevere in the fight, regardless of how difficult the trials may be
1. We must hold on to what we have, and grow stronger in the things of God, Job 17.9
2. We must stand our ground, and go on to multiply and be victorious in all that God demands of us and gives us to do, Mark 4.3-8
3. We enter into the Kingdom of God only after enduring significant and constant trials in this life, as we represent Jesus of Nazareth, Acts 14.21-22
C. C HECK THIS OUT . As warriors of God, we come to persevere as we remember who we are, stay sober and alert, and never give up
1. We must remember who we are, to whom we belong, and what is taking place in this fight we are in, Eph. 6.10-18
2. We must stay sober and alert, for the enemy is looking for a foothold in our lives by which he can undermine our warfare, 1 Pet. 5.8-9
3. We must recognize that warriors all over the world are encountering the same kinds of battles, and determine never to give up or in, no matter how hard the fight may be, 1 Pet. 5.9; Gal. 6.7-10; 1 Thess. 3.3; 2 Tim. 3.12
D. M AKE IT P LAIN . We must determine to share in suffering with our brothers as good soldiers of Jesus Christ, 2 Tim. 2.3
1. So what? To be a solder is to deny yourself the fineries and amenities of life; you got to go hard if you plan to go long!, Rom. 8.35-39

2. What you got to get: Only through a determination to gain the reward of Christ, at any cost, can we attain to the warfare to which we are called, 1 Cor. 15.58; 2 Pet. 3.14-15; 1 Cor. 16.13
To gain the reward, God’s warrior must persevere in the midst of trial.
Patience is an active endurance of opposition, not a passive resignation. Patience and patient are used to translate several Hebrew and Greek words. Patience is endurance, steadfastness, long suffering, and forbearance. God is patient (Rom. 15.5). He is slow to anger in relation to the Hebrews (Exod. 34.6; Num. 14.18, Neh. 9.17; Ps. 86.15; Isa. 48.9; Hos. 11.8-9). The Hebrews were frequently rebellious, but God patiently dealt with them. Jesus’ parable of the tenants depicted God’s patience with His people (Mark 12.1-11). God’s patience with sinners allows time for them to repent (Rom. 2.4), especially in the apparent delay of the return of Christ (2 Pet. 3.9-10). God’s people are to be patient. The psalmist learned to be patient when confronted with the prosperity of the wicked (Ps. 37.1-3,9-13,34-38). Christians should face adversity patiently (Rom. 5.3-5). Patience is a fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5.22). Christian love is patient (1 Cor. 13.4,7). Ministers are to be patient (2 Cor. 6.6). Christians need patient endurance in the face of persecution. Hebrews stressed endurance as the alternative to shrinking back during adversity (Heb. 6.9-15; 10.32-39). Jesus is the great example of endurance (Heb. 12.1-3). Perseverance is part of maturity (Jas. 1.2-4). Job’s perseverance is another example for suffering Christians (Jas. 5.11). John frequently highlighted the patient endurance of Christians (Rev. 2.2,19; 3.10; 13.10; 14.12). Christian patience is ultimately a gift from God (Rom. 15.5-6; 2 Thess. 3.5). ~ Warren Williams, “Patience” in Holman Bible Dictionary, elec. ed. 2012.

When Totally Surrounded, Move Forward!
The Battle of Chosin Reservoir has been recorded as one of the most vicious and nasty engagements of the entire Korean War, especially so since the Chinese military in full strength surrounded the exhausted U.N. forces from every direction. When outnumbered and completely surrounded, Lieutenant General Lewis Burwell "Chesty" Puller, the most decorated U.S. Marine in history, calmly surveyed the hopeless situation and said, "They're on our right, they're on our left, they're in front of us, they're behind us; they can't get away from us this time." Ultimately, the U.N. forces would break through the blockade by the Chinese, and free themselves from their “hopeless” situation.

~ Hebrews 12.1-2, The Living Bible

Session Two: How We Fight
Dr. Don L. Davis, p. 32

To Be Controlled by the Spirit Is to Live in Boldness A Spirit-controlled Christian has a true, godly sense of courage and boldness in spiritual warfare. Just before entering the Promised Land, Joshua was challenged four times to be strong and courageous (Joshua 1.6,7,9,18). When the early church prayed about their mission of sharing the gospel in Jerusalem, "the place where they had gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak the word of God with boldness" (Acts 4.31). Spirit-inspired boldness is behind every successful advance in the church today.

How We Fight With Heavenly Armor
Ephesians 6:11-18 – Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints Romans 13:11-12 – Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed. 12 The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 – For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. 5 We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ 1 Thessalonians 5:6-8 – So then let us not sleep, as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober. 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, are drunk at night. 8 But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation.

I. With Heavenly Armor
A. W HAT ’ S UP ? We do not do battle with our enemies with our own strength and cunning, but with God’s effective heavenly armor, 2 Cor. 10.3-5
1. We do not wage war according to the flesh, according to our own strength and wisdom, Prov. 3.5-6
2. We do not get involved in “civilian affairs,” 2 Tim. 2.4
3. We throw off everything that hinders us and entangles us–I do mean “everything!” Heb. 12.1-2
The Use of Armor Symbolically in the Bible
In the Old Testament, the devastating effect of a vicious tongue is compared with the destructive purpose of the sword and arrow (Ps. 57:4; 64:3; Prov. 12:18). However, when weapons are used metaphorically in the Old Testament, it is usually to help convey the supreme sovereignty of God. For instance, one’s primary dependence on military arms is considered foolish, since they are not the ultimate source of deliverance, whether it be by the bow or sword (Josh. 24:12; Ps. 44:6; Hos. 1:7). This is because God overpowers and shatters the bow and arrow, spear, sword, and shield (Ps. 46:9; 76:3). In other places, God’s judgment is spoken of as a bow or sword (Ps. 7:12-13; Isa. 66:16; Jer 12:12). He also uses the literal weapons of conquering nations to judge Israel (Isa. 3:25). Finally, that God is the faithful protector of His people is often expressed by referring to Him as “a shield unto them that put their trust in Him” (Prov. 30:5), just as He Himself encouraged Abraham, “Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield” (Gen. 15:1). Arms and armor surface on only a few occasions in the New Testament. Of course, the New Testament times found Roman imperial soldiers equipped with metal helmets, protective leather and metal vests, leg armor, shields, swords and spears. Christ accepted a legal, defensive use of the sword (Luke 22:36-38), but he rebuked Peter’s illegal and more offensive strike against Malchus at a time of arrest (John 18:10-11). Often the New Testament uses arms and armor symbolically as in the Old Testament poets and prophetic books. The Word of the Lord and its piercing, penetrating effect is referred to as a sword (Eph. 6:17; Heb. 4:12; Rev. 1:16; 2:16; 19:15,21). Paul used both arms and armor of a soldier to express the virtues necessary to defend the believer against Satan (Eph. 6:10-17; compare Isa. 59:16-17). ~ “Armor” in the Holman Dictionary of the Bible, ebook.

B. B REAK IT DOWN ! God’s armor has divine power to destroy strongholds, arguments, and every lofty opinion raised against God’s knowledge, 2 Cor. 10.3-5
1. We don’t fight people, but spiritual forces that oppose the Lord, Eph. 6.10-12
2. God’s armor allows us to stand our ground, and withstand the onslaught of the enemy, no matter what he throws against us, Eph. 6.13
3. God’s full armor covers us perfectly, both defensively and offensively
Acts 28:16 – And when we came into Rome, Paul was allowed to stay by himself, with the soldier who guarded him.
Acts 28:20 – For this reason, therefore, I have asked to see you and speak with you, since it is because of the hope of Israel that I am wearing this chain.
a. The belt of truth: our faith is anchored on God’s unfailing promise and testimony, 1 John 5.11-13
b. The breastplate of righteousness: our righteousness in Christ which leads to sanctifying, righteous living in the Spirit, Rom. 6.13
c. The readiness given by the Gospel of peace (our shoes): stable, surefooted stance given by the Gospel, enabling us to stand in the fight d. The shield of faith: 2 ½’ wide, 4' long, overlaid with linen and leather, protecting the warrior, and all other pieces of armor (i.e., “extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one,” v. 16)
SIAFU Mens Conference, Band of Brothers: Why We Fight Rev. Dr. Don L. Davis, p. 37
e. The helmet of salvation: the instrument of safety to protect one’s head against all blows, intentional or random (cf. 1 Thess. 5.8)
f. The sword of the Spirit (the Word of God, “ rhema ”): the one offensive weapon mentioned, sharp, potent, effective (cf. Jesus doing battle with the devil in the wilderness, Matt. 4.1-11)
g. Praying at all times in the Spirit: our use of God’s weaponry must be bathed and saturated in constant prayer and dependence on the Spirit, Zech. 4.6
C. C HECK THIS OUT . Regardless of the battle, God’s armor, if used properly and constantly, will help us win the day!
1. It can destroy strongholds, arguments, and lofty opinions, 2 Cor. 10.3-5
2. It can guarantee that we stand firm, in both freedom and victory, as we move forward to take ground for Christ (note: there is no armor for the back, only for the front!), Eph. 6.13
3. It can provide us with all we need to defend against the world, the flesh, and the devil in close encounter, daily combat with our enemies, 1 John 2.11-15; Gal. 5.16-23; James 4.4
D. M AKE IT P LAIN . We must learn through practice and prayer to employ God’s heavenly armor, for it alone can enable us to stand our ground in spiritual battle!
1.
The enemy is too cunning, 1 Pet. 5.8-9
2. We are too weak and vulnerable in our own strength, John 15.4-5
SIAFU Mens Conference, Band of Brothers: Why We Fight Rev. Dr. Don L. Davis, p. 38
3. The bondage is too deep; it requires divine intervention, i.e., spiritual deliverance by spiritual means, i.e., the power of darkness cannot be overcome save with Christ’s divine power, Col. 1.13; Isa. 49.24-25; Matt. 12.28-30

Matthew 12:28-29 – But if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. 29 Or how can someone enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man? Then indeed he may plunder his house. 30 Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.
Romans 13:14 – But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.

Good Pretense Revisited: You Must Learn to Think and Act Like A Warrior
At the moment of conversion, all of God's resources are available to us. Unfortunately, nobody pushes the "clear" button in our previously programmed minds. Until God's transformation process begins in our lives, we live in a state of being conformed to this world and regimented by it. That's why Paul writes, "Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will" (Rom. 12.2, N IV). Therefore-
• the major task of Christian education is to disciple previously programmed people, living independent of God, into a dependant relationship with Him.
• the major task of discipleship/counseling is to free people from their past and eradicate old defense mechanisms by substituting Christ as their only defense.

How We Fight With Longsuffering Courage
2 Timothy 2:1-7 – You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, 2 and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. 2 Timothy 1:8-10 – Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God, 9 who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began, 10 and which now has been manifested through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel Acts 20:22-27 – And now, behold, I am going to Jerusalem, constrained by the Spirit, not knowing what will happen to me there, 23 except that the Holy Spirit testifies to me in every city that imprisonment and afflictions await me. 24 But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God. 25 And now, behold, I know that none of you among whom I have gone about proclaiming the kingdom will see my face again. 26 Therefore I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all, 27 for I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole counsel of God.
