3. Allow for differences in applications and appropriation of the text: Jesus is alive!

a. One size does not fit all: we cannot know precisely how the Lord may want another to apply his Word, John 21.20-22.

b. We are to use freedom in our expressions, but in sync with Christian charity and edification.

(1) 1 Cor. 6.12

(2) 1 Cor. 10.23

(3) 1 Cor. 8.13

c. Distinguish between suggestions and mandates in regard to your application of biblical principles (e.g., God tells me to love my wife as Christ does the Church, but there is no application that can mandate flowers and a movie every week!)

E. Remember that all applications are variations on a theme : the essentials.

1. Love for God and neighbor are the first and second commandments, Matt. 22.36-40.

2. We are to use our freedom not as a license for sin, but as an opportunity to love others, Gal. 5.13.

3. All that we do is to be done for the good of our neighbors, for the building up of the body, 1 Cor. 10.24.
