III. Contemporary Images of Effective Biblical Mentor/Communicators

A. Importance of analogies and metaphors in biblical communication

1. The role of the communicator is thicker than merely passing on information; biblical communication is about disciple making, not merely passing on data, John 8.31-32. 2. Developing a working and persuasive model of biblical communication can free preaching and teaching from stereotypes regarding how we contextualize the Word of God (cf. Acts 17 with Col. 1.15-19 and John 1.1-3). 3. Adopting a clear model of how we relate as communicators to those who receive the Word we enrich the possibility of relationship we will explore with our audience (that is, we won’t reduce communicating the Word of God to the process of unscrewing our listeners’ skull caps and pour our biblical stews within them!). B. The Preacher and Teacher should encourage like a cheerleader , 3 John 3-4 (ESV) – For I rejoiced greatly when the brothers came and testified to your truth, as indeed you are walking in the truth. I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.

1. Be your students’ most loyal fan .

2. Make your record constant .

C. The Preacher and Teacher should diagnose and treat like a skilled physician , 1 Thess. 5.14 (ESV) – And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all.
