1. We have been adopted into God’s family by faith: huiothesia - “a placing” (combination of the Greek terms for “son” and for the verb “to place”).

2. We have received the Holy Spirit, who is called “the Spirit of adoption” Rom. 8.15-16.

3. The Spirit of adoption has made us God’s very own kin, his kids, and as his children, then heirs of God in Christ, Rom. 8.15-16.

C. This call to community through regeneration and adoption has several practical implications for us as Christians and Church leaders:

1. God calls us to live in community, not in isolation.

2. We have become members of the one true Church of all places and all times.

4

3. Authentic discipleship involves belonging to a local fellowship of believers.

4. Christian leadership is for the sake of edifying and empowering the Church to become all it has been called to become in Jesus Christ, Heb. 13.17.

5. The call to Christian maturity is a call to community, not merely a call to my own personal welfare to the exclusion of other disciples.
