LESSON 1 | THEOLOGY OF THE CHURCH: THE CHURCH AT WORSHIP / 283
Conclusion • Worship is the response of the Church to the grace of God. • Salvation comes completely by the grace of God and there is no human being that can say that they have earned their salvation by what they have done. • Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are especially significant parts of Christian worship. • The Church differs on how to understand the Lord’s Supper and baptism. Some believe that they are sacraments, that is a means by which the grace of God comes to us while others believe that they are ordinances which symbolize and testify to the grace of God. Please take as much time as you have available to answer these and other questions that the video brought out. These questions were designed to help you review the material in this lesson related to God’s grace as the basis of the Church’s worship. As you answer these questions, try to form clear convictions about what the Scriptures teach in regard to the grace of God. Since Bible believing Christians differ about how the grace of God comes to us in the Lord’s Supper and baptism, please listen closely and respectfully to those in the class who may disagree with you. Be clear and concise in your answers, and where possible, support with Scripture! 1. What does sola gratia mean and why is it important? 2. What is the Pelagian heresy? 3. What is the difference between Christian traditions that describe baptism and the Lord’s Supper as sacraments and those that think of them as ordinances ? 4. What are the main biblical arguments for and against seeing baptism as a “means of grace”? 5. What are the four major views about the Lord’s Supper? 6. Why is baptismal regeneration (the belief that being baptized causes salvation) an unscriptural doctrine? How is this different from a sacramental view of baptism?
