In a recent outreach at church, Mother Williams, one of the oldest and most refreshing Christians in our entire fellowship showed up on a Saturday to attend our door to door canvassing campaign in our church. This canvassing demanded that those involved attend at least four of the six training meetings meant to prepare our workers for the kinds of responses they would encounter during their sharing the Gospel with our neighbors. Mother Williams, who desperately wanted to attend the meetings, was only able to make three of the six training sessions. She is arguably the most spiritual, most biblical, and most refreshing Christian in the church, with a long and wonderful record of teaching, training, and sharing her faith everywhere, naturally. Should Mother Williams be allowed to canvass today–why or why not? Recently, our church welcomed a minister, an intern, who will be working with the church for the next year in its outreach and mission efforts. As a graduate from a fine evangelical seminary, the intern is well trained in Scripture and the biblical languages, is experienced in ministry from an associates position at another church, and has served several times on short terms missions outreaches both overseas and in other urban communities. The intern is perfect for the position, except he simply doesn’t show respect for others. In all that he says and does he communicates a “holier-than-thou” attitude to the other members of the team, and demonstrates an attitude of superiority to the members of the outreach committee.
