The following questions were designed to help you review the material in the second video segment. As we saw this lesson, the power of the oikos , once rediscovered and re-employed in urban evangelism, can produce remarkable kinds of synergy and vitality in our urban outreach strategies. By concentrating on the oikos as the target of our prayers, efforts, and energies, we can move along natural lines of relationship, and trust God to use those who respond within the network to become evangelists and prophets within the network , sharing the good news of the Kingdom with their family and friends in their webs of influence. Make sure that you comprehend the importance of this critical concept. As always, seek to be clear and concise in your answers, and support your answers with Scripture! 1. What are the roots of the concept of family network in the OT? In the NT? Review again how the NT reveals the Gospel spreading through the natural channels of the oikos in Acts and the rest of the NT. 2. What would be a modern definition of oikos ? What place does place of origin, family background, and ongoing friendships play in defining the modern concept of oikos for city dwellers? 3. How do common kinship relationships and common friendships play into our modern ideas about oikos today? What about common associates and common interest groups affect the kinds of relationships that people in the city have today? 4. Why is oikos (or household, in the broad sense) evangelism so effective? Select one of the reasons given in the lesson and explain its significance for urban outreach? Can you think of other reasons why oikos evangelism might be more effective than seeking to reach people who are essentially strangers to us and others? 5. How do you understand the data on how most people come to faith? Is that shocking or surprising to you? What does it say about the nature of evangelism, and the kinds of strategies we must select as we seek to win our neighborhoods for Christ in the city? 6. Why is it so important that we find ways that emphasize the natural connection that people may have with those who are sharing the Gospel with them? What are some common ways in which we fail to emphasize this kind of connection in our evangelism strategies in the city?
