C. Implication for our understanding of the bishop office.

1. A prominent and important office in the Church of Jesus Christ.

2. While the person of elder and bishop may be the same, the function may be highlighted in different contexts to emphasize different understandings of the office.

3. Although many traditions of the church would not accept the role of bishop as a form of church government, it is virtually impossible to conceive of any church group functioning well without a living concept of the role of bishop as overseeing the group of churches affairs and serving its assembly.

Conclusion

» The notion of episkopos or “bishop” or “overseer” was developed through its usage in the Septuagint, in the classical Greek tradition, and its use within the NT church. » God has established overseers who exercise godly authority over the affairs of the Church to strengthen and advance his kingdom cause through the Church.
