B. Functions of the bishop

The modern-day understanding of the bishop arises from the very biblical notion of the need for pastors and churches to be given solid pastoral oversight if they are to remain healthy and reproduce.

1. Bishop has historically been understood as both a legitimate and necessary office of the Church.

2. While it may be difficult to pin down the fluid nature of the concept as a NT office, the function of a bishop has been recognized in all of the life of the Church through its history.

3. Bishops pastor pastors .

a. Pastors need pastoring.

b. The Pastoral Epistles reveal that developing leaders require teaching, training, and encouragement.

c. Regardless of the church government style, churches have historically recognized the need for pastors to receive ongoing support, fellowship, and input from godly overseers .

4. Bishops oversee churches (not just a single congregation).

a. Churches function best in association with other like-minded congregations.
