IV. Authority and Functions of the Bishop

A. Authority of the bishop

The biblical notion of bishop is synonymous with the biblical idea of elder and/or pastor.

1. Bishops are elders who provide both pastoral and ruling oversight usually over a number of pastors and churches.

2. Bishops derive their authority of actually being “one from among them” (i.e., pastors, elders) who has been granted authority to nurture and give oversight to them.

c. A “shepherd of the shepherds”

3. Bishops (like apostles) provide oversight and leadership over groups of pastors and churches for their well being and growth , Acts 20.28.
